Urban Miners have changed the location of their monthly stall selling refurbished electronic devices from Tamahere Country Market to the Lions Market in Cambridge for 2023.
Early signs are that the move is a big success. The first stall at the new venue this weekend had the most traffic and best sales ever, despite the blustery weather and imminent threat of cyclone Gabrielle.
Urban Miners stall coordinator Alan van Niekerk said “We are really very pleased with the turnout at our stall this weekend despite conditions. We weren’t exactly sure how the move to the Cambridge Lions Market was going to go, but we have had a steady stream of people stopping by to purchase items today. It really reinforces the need for this kind of initiative in Waipā.”
The stall sells laptops, computers, monitors and cell phones that have been repaired and upgraded by specialist volunteers at Urban Miners. The prices are affordable with cellphones generally priced between $5 to $80 and laptops and computers from $30 to $120.
The concept of selling refurbished goods directly to the community started last year to prevent functional items being sent to landfill unnecessarily. It is one that clearly resonates with the Waipā community as the stall has had steady support from the outset. It also helps to keep pace of regular requests received by Urban Miners for low-cost electronic equipment.
The success of this first stall at the Cambridge Lions Market is a great outcome for Urban Miners, and one that will also make running the stall more affordable and manageable for the local team of volunteers involved.
The next Urban Miners stall will be on Sunday March 12, 2023 from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm at Memorial Park, 62 Taylor Street, Cambridge.
